Three Canadians are being awarded medals from the Pan Am Games as a result of international athletes who were disqualified for doping infractions.

Swimmer Zack Chetrat, of Oakville, Ont., moves up from bronze to silver in the 200-metre butterfly, while teammate Victoria's Alec Page gets bumped to bronze in the same event after Peruvian silver medallist Mauricio Fiol tested positive.

Toronto's Rachel Hannah finished fourth in the marathon race last July, but winner Gladys Tejeda of Peru was stripped of her gold medal following a failed doping test administered during the Games.

She'll receive her bronze medal on Saturday in Kingston, Ont., during a special ceremony at the Canadian cross-country championships.

"Congratulations to Zack for his silver medal and to Alec and Rachel for their bronzes, all so rightfully earned," said Tricia Smith, the newly elected president of the Canadian Olympic Committee.

"I congratulate them for their achievements. The COC is resolute in its determination to protect clean athletes from doping. While the situation that prevented them from getting those medals in the first place is disturbing, we are pleased it was rectified. It underlines the need to be ever more vigilant in protecting the integrity of sport."

Canada's final medal total at the Pan Am Games reached an all-time Canadian record of 219 medals: 78 gold, 70 silver and 71 bronze.

Hannah's Pan Am bronze pushes the Canadian track and field team's total to 27 medals, an all-time best result for the team.

Russia bans 5 athletes for doping

Two Russian weightlifters, two professional cyclists and a sport dancer have been banned for doping, the country's anti-doping agency said Thursday.

Both cyclists race for Itera-Katusha, the junior team of Russian world tour team Katusha, which was briefly denied a license in 2012 over repeated doping violations but regained it on appeal.

The cyclists are Ivan Lutsenko and Andrei Lukonin, who represented Itera-Katusha in European tour events this season. Lutsenko also won the silver medal at this year's Russian national under-23 championships.

The weightlifters include Russian junior silver medalist Azamat Dzhioev, who received a four-year ban. He was previously banned from 2012 until last year for another doping offense.

Also suspended is Russian Cup bronze medal-winning weightlifter Sergei Zhuromsky, who received a four-year ban, and sport dancer Andrei Gusev, banned for a year.

The agency did not say what doping substances were involved in any of the cases.

The Russian anti-doping agency is itself suspended from carrying out most work as it faces accusations of covering up failed drug tests for leading Russian athletes. Agency spokeswoman Natalya Koshel tells the AP that Thursday's cases were not blocked by the agency's suspension since processing was already under way when the suspension was handed down.
