World Series rugby sevens: Canada ousted by Wales at Hong Kong rugby sevens
Welsh have beaten Canadians in last 3 tourneys
Canada endured another disappointing day on the World Sevens circuit Saturday, consigned to consolation play at the Hong Kong Sevens after losing to Wales for the third tournament in a row.
The Canadian men had come close to upsetting Fiji on Friday but could not maintain that form, falling 24-10 to Wales on Saturday. Nathan Hirayama and Harry Jones scored the Canadian tries.
Canada, ranked 13th in the overall standings compared to No. 12 for Wales, then had to overcome a 14-5 deficit against unheralded South Korea before pulling away to win 31-14. The Koreans were making their season debut on the circuit.
Hirayama, Conor Trainor, Lucas Hammond, Justin Douglas and Pat Kay scored tries for Canada. For Trainor, it was his 50th try on the circuit. Hirayama added three conversions.
Canada will play Samoa in the Bowl quarter-finals Sunday. The Pacific Islanders are one of the teams the Canadians will have to beat at a last-ditch Olympic qualifying tournament in June in Monaco if they want to get to Rio.
Fiji, New Zealand and the U.S. swept their pools to roll into the elite Cup quarter-finals Saturday. England also topped its pool unbeaten, albeit drawing with Russia 12-12.
In the quarter-finals Sunday, it's: Fiji versus Kenya, England versus Australia, New Zealand versus Wales and U.S. versus South Africa.
The U.S., a quarter-finalist in all seven legs in the World Series, beat Australia 22-7 to top Pool C, boosting a 12-7 lead at halftime with long-range tries finished by Perry Baker and Ben Pinkelman.
Baker also scored two as the U.S. came from 14-0 down to beat Argentina 26-14.
New Zealand, down to a 10-man squad after captain Tim Mikkelson and Sam Dickson were ruled out injured, gave the armband to DJ Forbes, who scored the only points with two minutes to go as Kenya was edged 5-0.
Kenya lost to France 17-10 but finished second in its pool on points difference.
England conceded a second-ever draw with Russia, and created history earlier when Dan Norton's second try in beating Scotland 19-0 made him the 13th person to pass 1,000 points in world series history.
England still topped Pool B ahead of South Africa, which defeated Russia and Scotland by a combined 81-0.
Fiji dispatched South Korea 57-0 and Wales 36-10.
