The many faces of Carolyn Taylor in Baroness Von Sketch Show
Spotlight on Carolyn Taylor’s incredible transformations in Baroness von Sketch Show.
Carolyn Taylor's career technically started early on as part of the Children's Shakespeare Company of Montreal — in the role of a fairy, in a production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. During her interview with CBC Comedy's Next Up she explained that she was then promoted to Snug (the joiner) where she earned big laughs at nine years old. Remembering the moment with a smile Taylor added: "I was like, 'ooh, this feels really, really good.'"
That moment seems to have sparked her interest in comedy and Taylor continued to fan that fire — eventually becoming a Second City alumna, a writer for This Hour Has 22 Minutes and Corner Gas, an actor in Queer as Folk, Howie Do It and another CBC comedy, Cavendish.
Fast forward a few years to her co-creation of our popular all-female sketch comedy show Baroness von Sketch Show — which you can find on CBC Gem — where she shines as a writer and a performer pushing the envelope on workplace harassment, sexual assault, success and so much more, fiercely enveloping each character: from a store clerk to a botoxed diva.
Fun fact, she almost gave up on her TV and comedy career the night before BvSS was green lit by the CBC. Luckily for us she didn't, and we now get to watch her transformations into these hilarious characters.
On one occasion, Taylor says she was told she'd be better off behind the camera. What a waste of talent that would have been, if she had listened. We can safely say that she made the right choice. Evidently.
And just for fun, let's take a look at what she had to say about her favourite sketch from season two of BvSS where you can see her and fellow Baroness, Jennifer Whalen, in action.
One more. Because it's really funny.
Watch Baroness von Sketch Show on CBC Gem and be sure to check back on CBC Comedy and CBC Television in a week for another BvSS transformation profile!
