Hundreds of striking teachers are rallying at Canada Place as first week of school ends with no further talks planned.

The teachers, backed by a number of other unions at the rally, are calling for binding arbitration.

Minister Peter Fassbender said he did not relish handing over responsibility to a third party.

"It has in the past significantly impacted taxpayers in a significant way," he says. "A balanced budget is critical to our future."
