A man and young child were taken to hospital early Thursday morning, after they were pepper sprayed at the Newton bus loop in Surrey, B.C., according to police.

Officers were called to the Newton Exchange at 137 Street and 72 Avenue at approximately 2 a.m., according to Sgt. David MacDonald with Surrey RCMP.

Macdonald said three males were arrested nearby in relation to the incident, and the attack may have been random.

"The investigation is in its early stages, but initial indications are that this incident involves parties that are unknown to each other," said MacDonald.

MacDonald said that the suspects did not appear to be attempting a robbery, but the motivation for the attack is unclear.
