Okanagan girl stabbed to death at house party

A teenage girl has been stabbed to death at a house party in B.C., this time in the Okanagan town of Peachland, south of Kelowna.

Police said that when they arrived at the downtown residence at about 9:30 p.m., the 16-year-old girl was bleeding from several serious stab wounds.

She was taken to Kelowna General Hospital where she later died.

RCMP arrested a 16-year-old girl at her West Kelowna home later that night in connection with the death.

Police said the two knew one another and were students at the same West Kelowna high school, but because of their ages, their names will not be released.

RCMP Const. Steve Holmes said the party was being held at a home known to police.

"I know there was alcohol involved and this is a place we had been to in the past for similar complaints," he said.

Holmes said local school officials are providing counselling for students.

"Simply put, we've got a young female whose life is gone. Another young female whose life is going to be affected and a lot of other youth who are profoundly affected by this tragedy," he said. 

"The magnitude of what has happened I'm sure is still hitting people at the school level. I know that the school board is involved with the crisis counselling," said Holmes.

"I know this is going to be a very, very tragic day for them, as many of their friends are finding out what has happened," said Holmes.

It is the second such stabbing in recent weeks. Last week an 18-year-old Surrey girl was charged with second-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old girl at a Vancouver house party two weeks ago.
