Surrey RCMP say a man who was significantly injured Sunday night was stabbed and not shot as originally reported.

Police had initially responded to calls of shots fired in the Port Kells neighbourhood around 184 Street and 92 Avenue shortly after midnight.

When they arrived, they found a man with serious injuries.

Police issued a news release Monday morning clarifying that in fact, shots had not been fired and that a man had suffered significant injuries consistent with stab wounds.

He was transported to hospital where he is currently being treated.

Investigators believe the attack was targeted, but they haven't named the victim or said if any suspects have been identified.

Streets in the area will be closed while investigators gather evidence.

Anyone with information can call Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS if they wish to remain anonymous.
