Alta. premier appoints 3 regional recovery ministers

Alberta Premier Alison Redford has appointed three associate ministers of regional recovery and reconstruction to deal with the aftermath of the province's devastating floods.

The new ministers are Greg Weadick for the province's southeast, Kyle Fawcett for Alberta's southwest and Rick Fraser for High River.

"This disaster is entirely unique in its speed, its scale and its scope in the number of people and communities that it impacted," the premier said Sunday. "That is why, to date, we have brought together all provincial resources to respond to this disaster through the Alberta Emergency Management Agency. And today, we begin to rebuild."

The three ministers will be on the ground every day in their regions of responsibility, Redford said.

First Nations recovery will be overseen by Robin Campbell, the minister of aboriginal relations.

MLAs from Calgary will work with city officials to move the city towards recovery.

In an emergency meeting of the Treasury Board on Sunday, the premier met with officials to establish a detailed plan for deploying short- and long-term resources.

These will be focused on providing financial assistance for Alberta families and communities with uninsurable damage, supporting long- and short-term infrastructure needs and prosecuting businesses or individuals who commit price gauging to take advantage of flood victims.
