Charges laid in hit-and-run that killed Ontario man east of Lake Louise, Alta.
Calgarian Rhowel Esperanza, 45, arrested just outside of Golden, B.C.
Charges have been laid in a hit-and-run that killed a man and seriously injured a woman who were walking on the side of the Trans-Canada just east of Lake Louise, Alta.
An Ontario couple parked their vehicle at a rest area on Highway 1 to take photos around 9 a.m. on Thursday when they were struck on the shoulder of the roadway by a westbound pickup truck, RCMP said.
EMS and STARS responded to the collision and attempted to resuscitate the 39-year-old victim, but he died at the scene, RCMP said. The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the truck did not stop, and the vehicle was later located by RCMP in Golden, B.C., around 11 a.m.
Rhowel Esperanza, 45, of Calgary was found just outside of Golden and arrested after an investigation.
Esperanza will be brought back to Alberta to face charges of:
- Dangerous driving causing death.
- Dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
- Failing to stop after an accident resulting in death.
- Failing to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm.
RCMP said an update will be provided when Esperanza's judicial release hearing has been completed in Alberta.
