City of Calgary's 'sunshine list' details salaries of employees

The City of Calgary has released its first-ever salary disclosure list for employees, detailing job titles and salary ranges for all 13,000 positions at the city.

One in five Calgary city employees make more than $100K a year

The City of Calgary has released its first-ever salary disclosure list for employees, detailing job titles and salary ranges for all 13,000 positions at the city.

The list shows 72 per cent of municipal workers make between $50,000 and $100,000 per year while about 20 per cent earn more than $100,000 per year.

City manager Jeff Fielding says the city compares its salaries to other sectors to ensure it's competitive and not overpaying.

"We're benchmarking against not only our market here in Calgary, which includes private sector companies, but we're also looking at other organizations that are local government and other levels of government to ensure that, again, we're not leading, but we're in a situation where we're competitive," said Fielding.

Some members of council, such as Diane Colley-Urquhart, are already criticizing the list for its lack of detail. She says it can't be called a sunshine list because it doesn't attach names to salaries.

Coun. Ward Sutherland is already planning to bring forward a motion calling for greater detail in next year's list.

The full list is on the city's website.

Calgary Police Service (CPS) salaries were also released Wednesday.

More than half of officers make between $75,000 and $100,000 per year while 94 of the 2,800 employees earn between $125,000 and $350,000.

CPS employees include 2,122 sworn officers and 746 civilian staff.
