Calgary Underground Film Festival promises no shortage of unique and absurd

From April 17-27, the Globe Cinema will be your headquarters for independent films, a retro cartoons party, indie video games and more.

Celebrate, cinephiles — CUFF-ing season is here! The Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF) returns April 17-27, bringing all the weird and wonderful that audiences have come to expect.

For 11 days, the Globe Cinema will be your headquarters for an eclectic mix of independent films, a retro cartoons party, and an indie video game arcade.

2025 festival highlights include:

  • 41 feature films, 45 shorts, and 8 special events
  • A free screening on National Canadian Film Day (40th anniversary of Winnipeg cult comedy, Crime Wave)
  • The fan-favourite Saturday Morning All-You-Can-Eat Cereal Cartoon Party
  • Made-in-Alberta films, episodic content and short films.
    ○ The North American premiere of Calgary director Mike Peterson's Shadow of God.
    ○ Rob Grant's This Too Shall Pass, produced by Mike Peterson and shot in Calgary.
    ○ A package of episodic content, all created in Calgary.
    ○ CUFF will also show 10 Alberta short films, playing across 3 short film packages and before features.
  • Over 65 filmmakers, actors, creators, and industry professionals in attendance to talk about their films in post-screening Q&As, and participate in free, public panels.
