Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County for Thursday evening.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County for Thursday evening.

The advisory from Environment Canada says "conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain."

Wind gusts could reach 110 km/h in some spots and torrential rainfall could bring more than 50 mm to parts of the area. Nickel-sized hail is also possible.

"Utility outages are possible. Significant damage to property, buildings and trees is possible," the advisory says.

People are reminded to watch the conditions and take cover if severe weather approaches. 

"If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail. When thunder roars, go indoors," the advisory says.

Thursday saw the return of hot and humid weather in the area with temperatures reaching 32 C by 3 p.m. Thursday with a humidex value of 43.

Friday's forecast is calling for a mainly cloudy day with a chance of showers in the morning. The high is expected to reach 29 C but it will feel like 37 C because of humidity.
