Man charged in fatal Kitchener house explosion makes brief court appearance

Udo Haan, the man charged in a Kitchener house explosion that killed his wife Edra Haan in August, made a brief court appearance Thursday morning.

Haan, 58, remains at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener. He was found critically injured following the house explosion on Sprucedale Crescent just after 8 a.m. on Aug. 22.

Emergency crews found the body of 58-year-old Edra Haan in the backyard of the home.

Haan said only his name and listened as his lawyer, Stephen Gehl, asked to adjourn the case to Nov. 2. Gehl said he expects to receive disclosure from the Crown by mid-next week and needs time to review it.

A bail hearing has not yet been set.

Haan, 58, has been charged with first degree murder, one count of arson disregard for human life and two counts of arson damage to property.

The explosion destroyed the Haan's house and significantly damaged two neighbouring homes.
