Waterloo Catholic school board moves Monday's meeting location again

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board has moved its Monday meeting location back to the Catholic Education Centre. The board, which is anticipating demonstrators as it discusses a flag policy, had moved the meeting because the centre is adjacent to a polling station.

Monday's trustees meeting for the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) has been moved again — back to the original location.

The board is anticipating demonstrators at Monday's meeting because trustees are discussing a flag policy that would ban any flags that aren't the Canadian, Ontario or school board's flag from flying or being displayed at schools. That would include Pride flags.

Last week, the board said the meeting would be moved from the Catholic Education Centre on Weber Street W. to Resurrection Catholic Secondary School in Kitchener. That's because a building adjacent to the Catholic Education Centre will be a polling station during Monday's federal election.

The board said the move was "out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with community partners."

But on Tuesday, the board said that "due to an oversight in the director's office" the meeting would be moved back to the Catholic Education Centre as originally scheduled.

"We will continue to take steps to avoid interfering with voter access. We appreciate the community's patience and understanding and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused," the board said in a statement on its website.

The last two meetings by trustees at the WCDSB have drawn demonstrators who both support and oppose the changes to the board's flag policy.

In the past month, the board has seen changes to its leadership.

At the end of last month, the board announced trustee Robert Sikora had stepped down as chair of the board. He was replaced briefly by trustee and vice-chair Linda Cuff on an interim basis. Then Cuff put her name forward to serve as chair and tied with fellow trustee Renée Kraft for the role. The position ultimately went to Kraft after names were drawn from a hat to break the tie.

After Kraft was named chair, Cuff stepped down from her role as vice-chair of the board. Both Sikora and Cuff continue to serve as trustees.
