A person who went missing after a swim off the back of a boat in Lake Erie has been found dead by provincial police dive crews.

The 64-year-old disappeared last Thursday near Port Stanley and was found seven days later, approximately 6.5 km from the last reported location, police said.

The sailboat operator reported the person missing when realizing they were unaccounted for.

The Ontario Provincial Police used planes to scan the lake from above, as well as the marine and dive teams.

Police said this incident is a tragic reminder to wear life jackets in large bodies of water.
