London police are investigating after officers say they located an injured girl while responding to a home in the city's northeast.

Police say they and paramedics were called to an address in the 200-block of Boullee Street, north of Cheapside Street, around 10 a.m. on Tuesday to check on the welfare of a child.

There they located a female toddler "with injuries requiring medical attention," a police spokesperson said in a brief statement.

"The child was transported to hospital by paramedic services and has since been transported to hospital in Toronto to receive treatment for the injuries."

Few other details are known about the incident, including the extent and severity of the child's injuries. Police also didn't say whether any arrests had been made or charges laid.

Police said Wednesday that they remained at the scene for an ongoing investigation by the department's sexual assault and child abuse section.

The property where the child was found is operated by London and Middlesex Community Housing (LMCH) which said Thursday that they're cooperating with the police investigation.

"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy. LMCH staff have been on site to offer support to tenants and ensure the continued safety and well-being of the community," spokesperson Matt Senechal wrote in an email.

CBC News spoke to neighbours at the scene, some of whom expressed shock, but were not willing to comment or who said they did not know the family.

"More information will be provided as appropriate and as it becomes available," the police statement said.
