The tenants of an east London apartment building are mourning the death of a young child who died of injuries sustained after falling from a balcony over the weekend.

Police and paramedics were called to 400 Lyle Street on Oct. 2, where they found the child with life-threatening injuries. The child was later pronounced dead in hospital.

On Monday, a small memorial of toys, flowers and stuffed animals stood at the site of where the child was found.

"It's really sad," said longtime resident Marlee Palinkas. "It's definitely changed the whole attitude of what's going around the building right now. People are a little bit more sensitive and on edge. Hopefully it does pass, but it's traumatic and people are definitely going to remember what happened."

Palinkas said the building management, Medallion Corporation, has posted hallway flyers offering information on outreach services.

Medallion Corporation said it would not be making a formal statement on the situation, other than to say its thoughts are with the child's family.

London Police have not confirmed the age or gender of the child. They have not revealed what floor the child fell from, but eyewitnesses told CBC News it was the nineteenth or twentieth.

Police said there are no further details to release at this time.
