Executive policy committee voted unanimously Wednesday in favour of Mayor Brian Bowman's motion to rename the city's Administration Building in honour of Susan A. Thompson, Winnipeg's first and only female mayor.

Bowman introduced the motion to his inner circle on Wednesday morning.

"As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Nellie McClung helping women win the right to vote, it is fitting that we also honour a historic first for women at the municipal level," Bowman said in a news release.

"Former mayor Thompson was the first woman to be elected Winnipeg's mayor, and recognizing her by renaming the administration building after her will ensure this achievement is honoured for many more years to come."

Thompson was elected in 1992 and served two terms as mayor. She also served as the first woman consul general at the Canadian Consulate in Minneapolis, Minn., and is the founding president and CEO of the University of Winnipeg Foundation.

Bowman credited council Speaker Devi Sharma with suggesting the move. Sharma is the city's first female Speaker.

The Administration Building is located next to city hall at 510 Main St.

The motion will be considered by council at its next meeting on Nov. 16.
