Manitoba's acting chief medical examiner has ordered an inquiry into the death of Dwayne Mervin Flett.

Correctional officers doing a routine check discovered Flett, 32, unresponsive in his Stony Mountain Institution cell during the early hours of April 15, 2015.

Officers immediately started CPR, which was continued by paramedics once they arrived, but Flett was pronounced dead in the ambulance just outside the prison.

An autopsy performed at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg determined the cause of death was hanging.

The inquest was called in accordance with the Fatality Inquiries Act to determine what, if anything, can be done to prevent similar deaths from occurring in the future.

Information about the date, time and location of the inquest has yet to be determined by the province's chief judge.

Flett had been at Stony Mountain since May 31, 2011, for sexual assault and sexual interference.
