Winnipeg's local basketball hero is now in critical condition following complications from brain surgery after a brain aneurysm on Saturday.

Chad Posthumus, a hometown player who was the first athlete to be signed to Winnipeg's Sea Bears, underwent a long and complicated surgery this week to repair a brain aneurysm he suffered during a training session on the weekend, a team Instagram post said.

Posthumus, who's 33, suffered complications from the surgery and is now in critical condition in the intensive care unit, the Sea Bears social media post said.

The family is thankful for the outpouring of support and continued prayers for Posthumus and ask for privacy at this difficult time, the team post says.

Posthumus was born and raised in Winnipeg and played high school basketball for the River East Collegiate Kodiaks. He's played with the Canadian national team and was a member of the Ottawa BlackJacks and the Saskatchewan Rattlers before returning to Winnipeg to play with the Sea Bears.

At a Manitoba Home Builders Association event on the state of housing in the province Thursday, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew expressed sadness for the Sea Bears player's medical emergency and offered prayers for Posthumus and his relatives.

"Chad's a great homegrown product here. We're super proud of him and we wish him and his family well," Kinew said.

The social media update on Posthumus's condition has over 2,000 likes on the Sea Bear's Instagram.
