Boy, 16, charged with 2nd-degree murder in 2024 fatal shooting in northern Manitoba

A 16-year-old boy who allegedly fatally shot a man in northern Manitoba last September has had his charges elevated to second-degree murder.

RCMP announced on Tuesday that the boy, who is from Chemawawin Cree Nation, was re-arrested and charged with the new offence as part of the ongoing investigation.

Officers were called about the shooting in Misipawistik Cree Nation in the early hours of Sept. 23, 2024. A 23-year-old man from that community was pronounced dead inside a home. 

The teen was initially charged with firearms-related offences. 

Misipawistik is on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg, about 400 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg. Chemawawin is about 35 kilometres directly west of there.
