Winnipeg police say a man in his 50s was physically assaulted while walking to a convenience store on Thursday evening.

The man was walking to the store on Stadacona Street around 6:20 p.m. when a man he didn't know walked toward him while saying something, police said in a news release on Sunday.

When the victim didn't respond, he was pushed to the ground and kicked in the body and head. Police said he managed to get up and enter the store before the attacker followed him inside and demanded he buy cigarettes for the man.

The victim refused and was assaulted again until a store employee said they were calling police, according to the release.

The attacker fled the scene, police said. The victim, who had minor injuries, reported the incident to police on Friday, the news release said.

Police are still searching for the attacker who they describe as a man in his 20s with a medium build and short black dreadlock-style hair.

The Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate and asks anyone with information to contact them at 204-986-6219 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
