A man in his 30s died after he was shot at a park in downtown Montreal in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

At around 12:45 a.m., several 911 calls were made to Montreal police about shots being fired at Place de la Paix, a park located just off St-Laurent Boulevard in the Ville-Marie borough.

The victim was found unconscious on the ground and suffering from a gunshot wound, according to Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils.

She said the suspect fired shots at the victim before fleeing the scene, prior to the arrival of the police. As of 2 a.m., no arrest had yet been made.

Resuscitation efforts by police and paramedics were unsuccessful and the man was declared dead on the scene.

On Tuesday morning, the identity of the victim was still unknown, according to Chèvrefils.

They set up a security perimeter to analyze the circumstances of the event and met with witnesses. Chèvrefils said surveillance cameras will also be checked.
