A 54-year-old man is facing several criminal charges after an hours-long police operation in Montreal's Saint-Léonard borough led to the discovery of a body inside a home.

Karim Mouhabeddine appeared at the Montreal courthouse on Tuesday to face charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

According to a spokesperson with the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), Monday's police operation began just before 5 a.m., after someone called 911 about a person who had been injured with a sharp object inside a residence.

That residence is located near the corner of Belherbe Street and Lacordaire Boulevard.

When police officers arrived, they found a 57-year-old man outside with injuries to his upper body.

He was transported to hospital in critical condition and his health has since stabilized.

For hours after that victim was found, police worked to arrest the suspect inside the home.

At around noon Monday, police confirmed the operation was over and the man had been put in police custody. Shortly after the arrest, officers discovered a body inside the home.

That death marked the sixth homicide of the year on Montreal police's territory.
