A 49-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a 45-year-old woman on Montreal's South Shore.

Around 3 p.m. Wednesday, local police were called to a home on Jules-Dumouchel Street in Châteauguay, Que., located southwest of Montreal.

At the scene, officers found a woman who was unresponsive, according to a spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ). Police later confirmed her death, at first calling it suspicious.

They confirmed on Thursday that they are treating it as a homicide.

Sources told Radio-Canada a child arrived at the scene following the incident and was taken into the care of police.

Police said a person of interest was later intercepted in Saint-Stanislas, Que., about 230 kilometres northeast of Châteauguay. Investigators met with the man and arrested him. He was formally charged in court Thursday.

According to Radio-Canada's sources, the man and victim were romantically involved.
