Saint John murder victim Cathy Bawn remembered with red silhouette

Cathy Bawn, the victim of a murder-suicide last year in Saint John, was remembered Sunday with an induction into the Silent Witness Program.

Family and friends remembered Bawn and told stories of the life she had. They also recalled the circumstances that led to her murder on June 30 last year.

One person could be heard saying, "I would love to be able to see her smile just one more time."

Bawn's red silhouette joins 28 others that tell similar stories of New Brunswick victims of domestic murders.

Not forgotten

As the silhouettes travel the country, loved ones hope the stories behind the silhouettes send a message of support to others. 

"The victims have been silenced, but now their voices come together in a collective way to say here are factors that put me at risk and I had no way of of getting help or support and maybe if we support other women there won't be more deaths," said Deborah Doherty, a member of the New Brunswick Silent Witness Committee.

Bawn's stepfather Darrel Melvin helped make her silhouette.

"It really gave me a sort of peace, like, you know like it she's gonna, her name's not going to be forgotten by doing this," he said. 

Melvin added that Bawn loved to travel and knowing her silhouette will now be doing that and helping others brings him some comfort.
