1.5-cent drop on gas for Canada Day driving

Motorists hitting the highways in Newfoundland and Labrador are finding Canada Day a slightly cheaper drive, thanks to a new price setting from the province's fuels regulator.

Motorists hitting the highways in Newfoundland and Labrador are finding Canada Day a slightly cheaper drive, thanks to a new price setting from the province's fuels regulator.

The Public Utilities Board lowered the ceiling on all grades of gas by up to 1.5 cents per litre.

It's the second price drop in as many weeks, and the third week in four where prices have declined.

The PUB usually sets gas prices on Thursday mornings, but pushed this week's setting ahead because the Canada Day holiday falls midweek.

The change means that a litre of self-serve unleaded gas can now sell for no more than $1.232 on the Avalon Peninsula, where prices are cheapest.

Meanwhile, the PUB also lowered the cost of diesel by half a cent per litre.

Furnace oil and stove oil both dropped by 0.53 cents per litre.
