Douglas Snelgrove, a member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, has been charged with sexual assault, stemming from an incident that took place while he was on duty.

The Ontario Provincial Police were called in by the RNC after the force received a complaint from the public on April 14.

In a news release Wednesday, the OPP said Snelgrove, a 10-year veteran of the RNC, is facing a single charge of sexual assault.

He was arrested on Tuesday.

According to court documents, the offence is alleged to have occurred on Dec. 21, 2014.

Snelgrove, 38, is scheduled to appear in provincial court in St. John's on Aug. 20.

In a separate statement, the RNC said Snelgrove is suspended from duty without pay.

"Any internal disciplinary matters will be dealt with at the conclusion of the matter in court," the force said.
