$67 cod: A costly feed of fish for Conception Bay South woman

A woman who took part in last year's food fishery has been fined $1,000 and ordered to forfeit 15 Atlantic cod after she was caught catching too many. 

Karen Dumont was convicted Dec. 10 in Harbour Grace provincial court for catching and retaining more than the daily allowable catch of groundfish during last summer's recreational fishery.

The $1,000 fine works out to a cost of $67 per fish. 

Participants are limited to five groundfish per day. However, the maximum boat limit when three or more people are fishing is 15 fish.

In addition to the fine, Dumont was prohibited from recreational fishing in Canadian waters for 12 months. 

This means she won't be allowed to take part in the 2015 fishery, which runs from July 18 to Aug. 9 and from Sept. 19 to Sept. 27.
