Mill in Corner Brook wants to burn tires as fuel.

A paper company in western Newfoundland is moving ahead with a plan to burn shredded rubber tires as fuel at its mill in Corner Brook.

Kruger has registered its plan with the provincial environment department.

The company will hold public meetings in Corner Brook in November

The idea of burning old tires at the mill was rejected five years ago when critics said it will create toxic emissions.

Proponents argue it  would help the province get rid of more than two million used tires now stored in the woods near Placentia. For years, the province has been looking for an environmently-friendly way to get rid of them.

The environment minister has until December 12th to decide on Kruger's application.
