Dwight Ball to commemorate Beaumont-Hamel centennial in Ottawa

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Dwight Ball will be in Ottawa on Remembrance Day to commemorate the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel and lay wreaths with other dignitaries in the nation's capital. 

Ball will be joined by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Governor General David Johnston and Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of Defence Kent Hehr. 

2016 marks the centennial of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel, and the premier's office said Ball's presence in Ottawa will remember "the historic sacrifices of Newfoundland and Labrador's men and women in uniform".

The Battle at Beaumont-Hamel on July 1, 1916, was "a tragic, yet defining moment in the history of Newfoundland and Labrador and I thank the Royal Canadian Legion for their efforts to ensure that more of our fellow Canadians are aware of the sacrifice and valour of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment," said the premier in a press release. 

National spotlight on Trail of the Caribou

Following the ceremony at the National War Memorial, the attention shifts to a locally produced documentary commemorating the 100th anniversary of Beaumont-Hamel.

Ball and Hehr will host the showing of Trail of the Caribou at the National Arts Centre. 

The film was produced by CBC St. John's and features Mark Critch and Allan Hawco, who will attend the Ottawa screening. It was televised on July 1, 2016, the 100th anniversary of the battle.
