The annual multiculturalism day fair at Bishop Abraham Elementary school in St. John's is a unique cross-section of cultures from around the world, and students say they love showing their cultures while learning about different ones.

Megan Flemming, a Grade 6 teacher, said the school is among the most culturally diverse in Newfoundland and Labrador. Thirty countries and 30 different languages are represented within its walls.

"This is just an event to help showcase all of the cultures at our school, and get students to feel like they're welcome here," added teacher Charlene Feltham.

"It's very hard to keep them calm on days like this, but we want them to get excited about things like these."

The event is also a day students look forward to. They gather to celebrate their own culture and learn from others through food, fashion and more.

Jasmeen Alfaoury, a Grade 6 student originally from Syria, told CBC News she was proud to showcase her hijab and golden jewelry.

"I'm really happy and excited," Jasmeen said. "This is the best day ever."

Sheldon Marsh, director of schools for Bishop Abraham, said the children's enthusiasm is infectious.

"I think it's a great opportunity to show the diversity of cultures here at Bishop Abraham," he said.

"It's a great opportunity for everyone to kind of see the uniqueness of the different food. The fashion show is certainly a hit.... It's really nice to see all the students coming out."
