Up close with a young black bear in Gros Morne
Couple took pictures from the safety of their vehicle
Lucas Meyer and his girlfriend, Brook Walters, had a close encounter with a young black bear on Monday morning.
The couple was driving toward Rocky Harbour in Newfoundland's Gros Morne National Park when they noticed some vehicles pulled over with emergency lights flashing.
They pulled over themselves to see what the fuss was all about, and discovered there was a bear cub eating some grass on the side of the road.
Meyer rolled down his window and called the bear over. When the bear came closer, he put his window up and took some pictures from inside his car.
"He got a bit of dirt on my window," Meyer said, emphasizing that the couple never got out to see the bear, and never tried to touch it.
"If it was bigger I probably would've been frightened to death, but he looked like he was calm and harmless at the time."
Meyer, who is from the Baie Verte Peninsula, said he had never been so close to an animal like that before.
The Parks Canada website advises against stopping to see bears on the side of the road.
