Black bear warning issued for Humber Valley, Gros Morne
The province is asking some west coast communities to be on the lookout.
The province wants residents of some communities on the west coast of Newfoundland to be on the lookout for black bears, after sighting reports of the animals.
People in the Humber Valley, Bay of Islands, Deer Lake and Gros Morne area are cautioned to take steps to avoid attracting bears, by properly storing their garbage and not putting it out until collection day.
Anyone who does have a run-in with a bear is reminded to remain calm and give the animal space, while backing away slowly and avoiding eye contact.
The Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development asks anyone who sees a black bear in the area to call the forestry office in Massey Drive at 637-2370.
