Emergency crews responding to new wildfire on Burin Peninsula
Fire crews en route to Red Harbour area
Another wildfire has ignited in Newfoundland — this one on the Burin Peninsula.
Provincial fire duty officer Mark Lawlor said the fire is burning in Red Harbour, about 20 kilometres north of Marystown.
In a social media post, the Marystown Volunteer Fire Department said they're responding to the fire alongside the Baine Harbour Fire Department, forestry workers and multiple other agencies.
An evacuation order is not in place, but RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey said police officers are going to door-to-door in the community to alert residents, and make sure they are safe.
Marystown Mayor Brian Keating told CBC News a water bomber is also on site and it looks like the fire is starting to be contained.
In a social media post, the Town of Rushoon advised residents to be prepared for an evacuation order, adding there is currently no immediate threat to the community.
"Now is a good time to review your emergency plans and begin gathering essential items, just in case," the post said.
Rushoon is located northeast of Red Harbour.
This is the latest in a string of fires that have forced hundreds to evacuate their communities on the Avalon Peninsula, and stretched the province's firefighting resources.
The Kingston fire in Conception Bay North, a fire in Holyrood and another in central Newfoundland near the Martin Lake area off of the Bay d'Espoir Highway are all still burning out of control.
The province expanded evacuation orders in C.B.N. Thursday afternoon.
Marystown assistant fire Chief Justin Noel has no other information on the Burin Fire at this time.
