Canadian Tire shoplifting spree leads to arrest of Stephenville pair

A simple report of shoplifting led police to more than $3,000 worth of stolen goods in Stephenville on Wednesday.

A simple report of shoplifting led police to a major cache of stolen goods in Stephenville on Wednesday.

RCMP responded to a report of a theft in progress at a Canadian Tire on Prince Rupert Drive just after 5 p.m. 

Officers tracked two suspects to an apartment about a half kilometer from the Canadian Tire.

A man and woman in their 20s were arrested, and several flat-screen TVs and other electronic devices were found.

A further search of the apartment turned up more property believed to have been stolen from Canadian Tire and other stores around town.

In total, police said more than $3,000 in stolen goods were recovered,

The 28-year-old man and 21-year-old woman, both from the Stephenville area, are facing multiple theft charges and were jailed pending court appearances on Thursday.

Additional charges were laid on the female suspect for assaulting a police officer and damaging the officer's car.
