Charges are pending against two men caught trying to make away with a butchered caribou from Merasheen Island in Placentia Bay.

Fish and Wildlife enforcement officers arrested the men, both from South East Bight, on Friday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice and Public Safety said one man was arrested on the water near Merasheen Island, while the other man was apprehended on land as he loaded the caribou onto a boat.

Officers seized the quartered caribou, two rifles, ammunition, and a nearly 5.8-metre motorized boat.

No charges have yet been laid, although the department said they are pending as the investigation continues.
