Mark Carney to kick off federal Liberal campaign from St. John's today

Mark Carney is set to kick off his election campaign at 7:00 p.m. in St. John's.

Event set for 7:00 p.m. this evening

St. John's will be Mark Carney's first stop today, after the federal election begins.

The Prime Minister's Office confirmed to CBC News on Saturday that Carney will be asking Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament today, triggering the election.

Carney will meet with Simon at noon ET, then hold a news conference at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Liberal Party sources confirmed that after a news conference Carney would be heading to St. John's for an event to be held this evening at 7:00 p.m. NLT.

The location for that event has yet to be officially announced.

Previously, Liberal incumbent for St. John's East Joanne Thompson was set to hold an event opening her campaign headquarters this afternoon, but this has since been postponed.

Sources have confirmed to CBC News that the election will be held on April 28.
