Former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Danny Williams says Ed Martin's resignation as CEO and president of Nalcor Wednesday is a "huge loss for the province."

"I genuinely feel disappointed today," Williams said in a written statement.

Martin's resignation is effective immediately, and comes on the heels of the Liberals' roasting of Nalcor in its 2016 budget speech last Thursday.

Williams defended Martin, saying he faced "relentless and often recklessly partisan criticism" during his tenure.

"Ed is one of the most passionate individuals I have ever known in terms of wanting what is best for the future of our people," Williams said.

"As a result of his incredible experience and his work ethic, Nalcor has grown into a crown jewel for this province."
