Danny Williams eager to see WikiLeaks cables
Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams says he is looking forward to finding out why his name comes up in six documents WikiLeaks plans to release later this week.
Williams said he only found out Monday that he is mentioned in the documents but is unaware of their contents.
"I have no idea what that could be all about, to be quite honest with you, but I'm certainly looking forward to finding out," Williams said before chuckling.
Williams is named in four cables sent by the U.S. consulate in Halifax. Those are dated Oct. 23, 2003, March 31, April 30, and May 6, 2004.
His name also comes up in two cables sent by the U.S. embassy in Ottawa on Dec. 29, 2004, and Feb. 3, 2005.
The documents have not been made public, but the online whistleblower WikiLeaks confirms there will be as many as 2,648 documents mentioning Canada among the quarter-million it plans to release this week.
Williams, who spoke after a meeting Monday of Atlantic premiers in central Nova Scotia, is quitting politics Friday after seven years as premier.
