St. John's officials are pleased with the results of the first day of the curbside recycling program that began in the city Monday.

They are reporting a participation rate of more than 40 per cent.

On one street 55 per cent of the households took part, they said

Jason Sinyard, the manager of the waste management, said 15 tonnes of materials were diverted from the landfill.

"This is a pretty good start," he said.

Paul Mackey, the director of public works, said the first day's result is a solid base to build on.
