Deer Lake thrills crowd to win Herder
Deer Lake has claimed boasting rights for the Herder Memorial Trophy, with a 3-2 victory in the seventh game of the senior hockey hockey championship.
A Corner Brook audience cheered Deer Lake's Red Wings on to victory as they edged Conception Bay CeeBees.
"Seven games, three to two, anyone could have won it," said Red Wings player-coach Darren Langdon.
"Fortunately we did, and we're happy about it."
CeeBees coach Ian Moores described the loss as a heartbreaker.
"We played our guts out," Moores said.
"It feels like someone took a knife and stabbed you in your heart. [But] hats off to Deer Lake. They beat us today," Moores said.
The Herder series drew sell-out crowds in St. John's and Corner Brook, with an excitement for senior hockey not seen in years.
