A year-long investigation has led to cocaine smuggling charges being laid against three people from St. John's and three from Ontario.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the RCMP worked together in the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU-NL) as part of Operation Turbulence.

Drugs were strapped to at least two suspects thighs in both February and March. (CFSEU )

The CFSEU-NL said two women and a man from St. John's and a man from Ontario were working as drug mules and bringing drugs into Canada from outside the country.

The arrest in February included some drugs smuggled in a suitcase. (CFSEU)

All four were arrested at Toronto's Pearson International Airport in February and March after arriving from St. Lucia with drugs strapped around their thighs.

Thirteen kilograms of cocaine were seized during Operation Turbulence, according to a news release.

The cocaine has an estimated street value of $1.3 million.

Two more men, who police believe orchestrated the smuggling operation, were arrested in Toronto this month.

The investigation also received support from the Ontario Provincial Police.
