No fires, no fireworks: Bans in St. John's area lead to scaled-back Canada Day celebrations

Residents of the St. John's area are reminded that "no fires" also means no fireworks. A fire ban was put in place just two days before Canada Day celebrations get underway.

Residents of the St. John's area are being reminded that "no fires" also means no fireworks.

The St. John's Regional Fire Department issued a fire ban on Sunday, just two days ahead of Canada Day. Mount Pearl and Paradise are also under the department's jurisdiction.

Newfoundland and Labrador's fire hazard map indicated a risk of wildfire Monday afternoon.

In a post on social media, the City of Mount Pearl urged residents not to set fireworks. The use of charcoal barbecues and any outdoor wood-burning appliances are not permitted either.

St. John's is cancelling its annual firework show for Tuesday night, but the concert at Quidi Vidi lake will still go ahead.

"The St. John's Regional Fire Department are asking people to be fire safe when using fire pits and barbecues, to keep a hose or fire extinguisher handy, follow manufacturers requirements regarding clearances from combustible materials and continue to monitor the provincial fire index," reads a statement issued on Monday.
