How to deliver a package to Fort McMurray, for free
Domestic Moving & Storage to send packages to Fort McMurry, free of charge
A St. John's moving company is stepping up for people who have been devastated by wildfires in Fort McMurray, with an offer to move goods to Alberta at no cost.
Domestic Moving & Storage is offering local families the opportunity to send packages to Fort McMurray through a free service that's been dubbed the Family to Family Express.
"The idea is that families here who have relatives and loved ones in Fort McMurray will send off a little care package —something like a Christmas box — that will show everybody out there that they're thinking of them," co-owner Rex LeDrew told CBC's Here and Now.
Those who want to take advantage of the offer can bring their packages to the company's office on Blackmarsh Road.
"We've moved a lot of people to Fort McMurray over the years, and a lot of them back, and we'd like to pay back a little if we can," said LeDrew.
The company will also send its 53-foot delivery truck to Clarenville, Gander, Corner Brook, and Grand Falls-Windsor to pick up parcels. In Gander, the truck will pick up from the Walmart parking lot. In all other locations, packages can be delivered to RE/MAX offices.
The cut-off for accepting the packages will be either May 30 or June 1.
The journey is expected to last five or six days, and delivery of the packages will begin once the truck arrives in Alberta.
The company will be accepting packages up to 50 lbs in weight, or 5 cubic feet in size. The truck will be able to hold around 800 packages of this size.
