Frontier, new Discovery Canada series, to shoot in St. John's

The first scripted series for Discovery Canada will be filmed this summer in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Frontier will feature six hour-long episodes following the North American fur trade in the 18th century.

A new scripted series for Discovery Canada will be shot in St. John's this summer by Take the Shot Productions, the broadcaster announced on Wednesday.

Frontier is the first original scripted series ordered by Discovery, and will follow the struggle to "control wealth and power in the North American fur trade int he late 18th century."

Discovery Canada ordered the series from the independent production company, which also produced CBC's Republic of Doyle.

Alex Patrick, John Vatcher and Perry Chafe will sit as executive producers on the series.

Vatcher, who was also executive producer of Republic of Doyle and is co-CEO of Take the Shot, said in a statement the series will be "bursting with action."

Frontier will be shot in six hour-long episodes.

Principal photography for the series will start in St. John's in July.
