Wabana Mayor Gary Gosine retiring after decades-long run on Bell Island
After 35 years in public office, Gosine is calling it quits

After 35 years of serving his community, Wabana Mayor Gary Gosine is calling it quits.
"I have strived to make our town a better place for everyone to call 'home' and I hope that I have built a legacy that others reflect on some day," Gosine wrote in a post on social media on Wednesday.
His last day in office is Thursday.
Of his years on council, 29 were served as mayor.
Gosine was often known for fighting for better services for people living on Bell Island, a small community in Newfoundland's Conception Bay. In particular, he advocated for better ferry services that connect the community with Portugal Cove-St. Philip's.
Gosine said it's time to pass the torch to the next generation.
"I have witnessed the amazing work they do and I know that I am leaving our town in good hands," he wrote.
"It has been the absolute honour of my life to be in this role as your leader for the majority of my life. I can only wish that those preceding me in this position will hold the same pride for our community and continue to strive to make our town a better place for generations to come."
Gosine said he plans to take time to relax with his family and grandchildren.
