What are you at? This is it: the art of quilting

Lori Shortall, a longtime quilter in St. John's, says there is a lot more to designing an eye-catching quilt than just sewing a few squares of fabric together.

"You have to work in layers," said Shortall.

"You have to figure out what's going to be the farthest away in the background and what's going to be in the foreground," she said. 

"You want to have a balance of straight, curved, dark, light, big, small. It's all about balance."

Shortall said she designs, cuts, and places each fabric component on her quilts by hand.

Shortall estimated that her latest project, a music-themed wall hanging, will take her about 40 enjoyment-filled hours to complete.
