Marble Mountain lightning damage 'in the millions'

Just a few months before the Marble Mountain ski resort is slated to open for the winter season, damage caused by a lightning strike this summer appears to be more serious than first thought.

Chris Beckett, general manager of Marble Mountain, said the cost to fix the damage will likely exceed the insurance policy for the Corner Brook-area resort.

"We have discovered that there's been some damage to the electrical systems in the lower terminal," Beckett said.

The chair lift at Marble Mountain had been damaged when it was apparently struck by lightning during a rain storm on Aug. 8.

"We came across that just recently and now we're just trying to understand how far does that damage in the electrical systems go in that lower terminal," he told the CBC's West Coast Morning Show.

Beckett said various options are being considered to carry out the necessary repairs.

While Beckett would not confirm any numbers, he said total damage costs are running "in the millions," and that Marble Mountain's insurance policy may not be able to cover it.
