Meet Shreddy Krueger, Cat L. Prod and other roller derby stars
Bright colours, outrageous names and take-no-prisoners attitudes are on display with the 709 Derby Girls, reports Amy Stoodley.
They wear brightly-coloured fabrics, they whip by at stunning speeds, and they take no prisoners. They also have hilarious names like Shreddy Krueger, Betty Pain and Melody Violent-Time.
The 709 Derby Girls kicked off their third season this weekend before an enthusiastic crowd of fans at the Mount Pearl Glacier.
Part of the attraction for participants is the ability to play a persona on roller skates.
"It's just fun to have a secret identity," said the league's vice-president, who goes by the handle Cat L. Prod. "So, you're professional by day and you're your alter ego when you come out onto the rink and put all your gear on."
